OmniOutliner 2 App Reviews

no longer works on iOS 9

Immediately crahes (reverts to iPad home screen) after attempting to start. Useless until this is fixed :-( _ not fixed after 1 month _ Also crashing immediately on my new iPad pro.

Still very broken, very useless for iOS. Omni, are you listening?

Does it open? Yes. What happens next? Crash. This has been an on-going problem for this application on all iOS platforms for months now and still hasnt been addressed. Save your money until it is fixed. Unforgivably over-priced for an application that cannot be used.

Print is disabled for iOS version

This is a decent outliner but there are alternatives for iOS. It looks like the vendor has deliberately not provided a printing function for iOS so that you are forced to use the Mac version for "serious" work. In todays free market of iOS apps, my philosophy is to put money toward supporting the apps that give you better functionality so that those apps can continue to grow. This is the way market competition should work, for the benefit of the users. Vendors should understand that artificially depriving users of key functions is something that another software vendor has been known to do, and not to be acceptable to the Apple community.

Linear documents are obsolete

I like this app so much Id like to see all word processors and text handling apps implement outlining, websites, email, messaging, everything.

Great app with one great omission

OmniOutliner is software I cannot live without, at least on the mac side. On the iOS side, this is a 5-star app that I am giving 3 stars to for one glaring weakness: its inability to interface with Dropbox. This lack seriously crimps my workflow... I dont want another sync folder/service to have to keep track of. This is premium software at a premium price-point, so I feel this level of cloud integration should be expected.

So awesome and FLEXIBLE

This is so elegantly designed. You can use it for almost anything related to hierarchical text structures. Once you start learning the various features and options, you keep finding new ways to bend it to your will. And thats whats so great about this app—it hearkens back to the days when your software didnt try to tell you how to think and what your imagination should look like. This app provides a framework; what you build with it is more up to you than it even first appears. For example, I just learned that I could add a second column to my todo list, and the second column can be a pop-up menu with tags that I create, so I can sort/understand my tasks according to the type of mindset Im going to need to complete them. Bluetooth keyboard support on iPad is extensive! I can really work with this app comfortably on iOS; it doesnt feel like a cramped compromise. Ive fiddled around with Omnifocus too, but honestly this is better, because its simpler, more direct, and tries to do less thinking for me. I spend more time with the textual content of my thoughts, and less time tweaking systems and settings and GTD-fetish nonsense. ONE DEMERIT: The sync feature (OmniSync) is a little wonky and glitchy at times. you have to kind of know how to finesse it, and that can be nerve-wracking. its subtleties and sometimes non-obvious rules require more than an optimal amount of mental overload. I cant quite bring myself to dock a whole star off the review though--I dont feel like data loss is imminent. its just a bit of a PITA.
